The Latin elocutionem is its root, meaning “manner of expression;” in Classical Latin it meant public speaking or oratory.

 

While elocution is the traditional term, more modern terms being used today are accent reduction, accent softening, getting rid of your accent, public speaking, received pronunciation (aka – RP).
