The Indonesian Accent has a machine-gun rhythm!

Around 80 to 85 million Indonesian people speak English worldwide.
When Indonesians speak English, their accent is shaped by their native language: Bahasa Indonesia, and local dialects like Javanese or Sundanese.
Bahasa Indonesia has a syllable-timed rhythm: each syllable gets roughly the same amount of time to say.
The Indonesian Accent has a machine-gun rhythm!

Indonesia has hundreds of local languages, and the English accent changes based on where the speaker is from.
Javanese speakers will regularly use very explosive or “breathy” B and D sounds.
Sundanese speakers usually use less airflow on the F and V sounds, making them sound closer to a P sound.

While you can easily get by speaking English in Indonesia as a tourist or when doing business, the majority of the population prefer to speak their native Indonesian language or local dialects.

Fluency is much higher in major cities like Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung. Many rural areas only know basic words.
Millennials and Gen Z in urban areas have significantly higher English fluency than older generations.

There are some very strong Indonesian accents.
A strong Indonesian accent can cause problems when communicating in English.
